A theologically sticky problem

Sunday, July 15th, 2007

Yesterday, as I was cleaning out ’starburst’ wrappers and bits of crushed Alpen bar from under the child seats in my car, one of Iona’s friends, who was round to play asked this question…’How was God born?’ Of course her mother, thank you, had told her to ’Ask Janet’.

She looked a bit surprised as I tried to explain that God wasn’t born. We Christians believe that he has always existed, even before the earth was made or anything in the unvierse was made, he was there. She looked a bit as if her brain was really struggling with this, so I reassured her that nobody knows how this works and it’s too big a thing to understand, it’s a mystery.

I’m not sure this was the answer she was expecting, but I said if she had any more thoughts or questions about it she could ask me. Then she went off to the trampoline, and I went back to the sticky problems of my car’s rear seats.
